National Express History
Around the end of World War One, the first motorbuses appeared on roads throughout the United Kingdom. However, it wasn’t until 1968 that the National Bus Company was created to bring independent bus companies together under one common name, and by the mid-70s, the National Express name was used for the first time. In the 1980s, National Express was faced with competition from around the country, especially for routes to and from London, but was able to come out on top thanks to its new services and reduced ticket fares, thus winning the “coach wars.” By the 1990s, the company continued growing with new services to airports, and building coach stations in Liverpool, Leeds and Southampton. Today, National Express remains the country’s leading coach operator and offers routes all throughout the UK.
