Despite a tumultuous history of natural disasters and pandemics, the Portuguese capital of Lisbon’s medieval old town is still well preserved and is as beautiful as ever. An array of old stone facades, vintage trams and quaint alleyways greet visitors as the alluring aromas from street cafés and local bakeries beckon them. It’s Europe at its finest!

A real feast for the eyes, Lisbon offers plenty of impressive architecture to behold. Two particularly noteworthy landmarks include the warrior tower “Torre de Belém” and the maritime memorial, Padrão dos Descobrimentos, built to honor Portuguese sailors and the nation’s naval history. Across the river, the Christo Rei Statue stands tall with its arms out-stretched in a similar pose to Rio de Janeiro’s world-famous Christo Redentor Statue. Other sights worth seeing include the city’s largest park, Parque Florestal de Monsanto, the museum of national art, and the impressive Moorish castle, the Castelo de São Jorge.

Lisbon is easily accessible by intercity bus, with many operators, like Aerobus and Rede Expressos, offering numerous day trips from cities throughout the country. Travel to Lisbon’s main station, Lisbon – Sete Rios, right at the center of the city, from Faro, Lagos, and Porto or elsewhere in Europe.
