Originally a part of the Iroquois Confederacy territory, Niagara Falls was first visited by European settlers in the 1670s when Louis Hennepin, a French priest, traveled to the area. Settlement continued to increase after the American Revolutionary War when the British Monarchy granted land to loyalists who sought to resettle in Upper Canada as means of compensation for losses after the United States gained independence. One of the first people of European descent to live in the region was one such loyalist, Robert Land, who after three years resettled in Hamilton because of the noisy waterfalls.

The region began to attract visitors in the 19th century, and tourism became an essential part of the region’s economy ever since. The town of Clifton was initially built in 1856 before joining with the nearby community of Drummondville to become the city of Niagara Falls in 1904. There are varying opinions about the origins of the name Niagara with Iroquois scholar Bruce Trigger claiming it comes from a local native Neutral Confederacy, known as Niagagarega. Historian George R. Stewart, however says that the name derives from an Iroquois town called Onguiaahra, which means “point of land cut in two.”

The falls, widely regarded as a natural wonder, is made up of three waterfalls which straddle the Canadian and US border. The largest of the three, are the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side and the smaller of the two are the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls on the US side. They were said to be created when glaciers melted towards the end of the last ice age and are renowned for their beauty and as an important source of hydroelectric power.

Millions of people visit the falls each year, all year round with the falls roaring during the spring and summer months and spectacular light shows during the holiday season. Bus providers, such as Greyhound offer regular connections from major cities, like New York and Toronto.
